Samuel Barber Music for a Scene from Shelly
Antonin Dvorák Cello Concerto – Quirine Viersen, cellist
Aaron Jay Kernis Newly Drawn Sky
Leonard BernsteinOn the Waterfront Symphonic Suite

We started rehearsing the program for next weekend this morning (with two days off until our next rehearsals due to two days of viola auditions), and as we were working on three of the pieces it occurred to me that even though only one of them was explicitly written as a movie score (Leonard Bernstein’s Suite from On the Waterfront), they all inhabit a sound world that would not at all be out of place as the soundtrack to a classic Hollywood film.  As one colleague posted on Facebook today: “Batman, Phantom of the Opera, ET, Harry Potter…it’s all there this week. Oh, and Dvorak.”  Yes, and the program includes the US debut of Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen in the Dvorák Cello Concerto.  If you’re at all on the fence about coming to this week’s classical program – jump off that fence and get thee to the ticket office!
