My longtime teacher, Roberto Dìaz, seldom got worked up over much – he has the constitution of a Zen master – but one of the musical tropes that never failed to get him worked up were musicians who placed themselves ahead of the music that they were performing – be they conductors, singers, or instrumentalists. He would say “The artist should serve the music, instead of the music serving the artist”. I could not agree more. Amen.
