berlin philharmonic

young conductor

by Charles Noble on December 29, 2011

This one just made me smile: an 8 year old came up and tried his hand at conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in the witches’ ride section of Humperdinck’s opera “Hansel and Gretel”. Cuteness ensues.

what might have been

If you’re still smarting about Joshua Bell’s decision to change his program from Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto to the Brahms, then you can take solace in this amazing performance by Hillary Hahn with Mariss Jansons and the Berlin Philharmonic from Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan. To see the whole concert you’ll need to be a

shreddin’

There are some clever people in this world.  Do you remember the “Yo-Yo Shreds at the Inauguration” vid that popped up on YouTube? Then there was the “Perlman Shreds Winter”: Now, there is the “Berliner Philharmoniker Masterclass”: I was in tears for the last one – it’s a great job of dubbing over what the

I just stumbled on to an online virtual panel discussion at Polyphonic.org from several years ago centered on the subject of orchestral auditions.  One of the panelists, Fergus McWilliam is a member of the horn section of the Berlin Philharmonic – I thought his thoughts on the nature of how auditions are conducted in the

This is a work that I really hope that we get to do someday at the Oregon Symphony.  It uses tons of extra musicians, so it’s very expensive to do, but I hope that we can scrape together the 19-odd woodwinds plus brass to do this incredible piece.  I’ve only done it once before, in

I caught this poster and photo campaign over at Inside the Classics, and it’s one of the most simple and brilliant musician-centered media campaigns I’ve seen from any orchestra.  And it’s true. In addition, you can see each of the “rock star” posters for each musician on their own at the orchestra’s Facebook page. [click

I’ve been catching up with performances by the Berlin Philharmonic via my web subscription lately, and here’s one of their free preview clips from their performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique – and it’s fantastic, indeed! (You’ll note that, like our recent performance, they use the coronet part in the “Ball” movement).  Enjoy!

At the end of this season the Oregon Symphony will welcome Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä (above) to play Benjamin Britten’s great Violin Concerto.  I’ve really fallen in love with this concerto, in no small part due to the web broadcast of the Berlin Philharmonic with violinist Janine Jansen. Here’s a four minute sample of that

almost here…

by Charles Noble on August 27, 2009 · 4 comments

Today I rode in to downtown Portland to pick up music for the first couple concerts of the upcoming Oregon Symphony season.  Can I first of all say how pleasant it is to visit the OSO library these days?  Everyone is pleasant and helpful, and the mood up there is relaxed and professional. Anyway, with

dudamel in berlin

by Charles Noble on March 9, 2009

The Berlin Philharmonic offers a free video trailer of Dudamel’s concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic.  The video clip features a rehearsal segment from near the end of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.  Worth watching – requires a broadband connection.  The entire concert will be available to stream (for a fee) in a few days.

I was dubious of the concept that’s been hailed in the press and in the classical blogosphere lately about the Berlin Philharmonic’s new Digital Concert Hall project.  It will offer both live and archived streams in near high-definition video of orchestral and chamber music on demand for a subscription fee beginning on January 6, 2009.

(AP Photo/Herbert Knosowski) This afternoon the Berlin Philharmonie, the renowned (both acoustically and visually) concert home of the Berlin Philharmonic, had its roof catch fire due to (purportedly) a welding mishap.  The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but according to the Times, the Berlin fire service reports that the main auditorium

What would a Mahler symphony be without a sprawling, hectic, and by turns achingly beautiful scherzo? Well, quite a bit shorter, for one. Mahler is often in the habit of taking a huge movement in cut time and making a huge journey out of it, and the Ninth Symphony is no exception.

Carrie Dennis, the phenomenal violist who has (by the anything but grizzled age of 30!) already been Assistant principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, and was just named as Principal violist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has a couple videos up on youtube. See and hear her for yourself

Carrie Dennis, currently one of the principal violists of the Berlin Philharmonic (you might have seen her on the front desk for Monday’s broadcast of the BPO’s Mahler 9 with Simon Rattle), has been hired as the new principal viola of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
