It’s that time of year again. I’m so busy! I’ve got lots of music learned, half-learned, and yet-to-be-learned careening around my brain. I try to keep my schedule evenly spaced, but it just never works out that way. Performance dates might be spread out evenly, but the problem of booking ensemble rehearsals with people just as busy (or even busier) as I am makes for clumps. The next two weeks are clump-tastic.
Tonight, I’ve got a Mendelssohn Octet performance as a donor thank you for the Historic Old Church Concert Hall. Luckily, that only needed one refresher rehearsal from a performance in the fall. Next Friday (March 4th), I’ve got a performance with 45th Parallel, entitled “Music of Obsession”. My portion of the concert consists of Janacek’s First String Quartet “Kreutzer Sonata”, and Brahms’ C minor Piano Quartet.
Lots of rehearsals for that scattered throughout the week. The following week, I’ve got Third Angle New Music on March 10-11. The concert, part of the Studio Series, is entitled Radio Happenings. For that, I have rehearsals for the Webern Satz for string trio, op. posth., Morton Feldman’s Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello; and Cage’s Imaginary Landscape No. 4, as well as the Christian Wolff solo viola piece Violist Pieces.
Then, just two days later, I have a concert in Salem with the Arnica Quartet, which is another big program: Beethoven’s Op. 18 no. 3, David Ludwig’s Pale Blue Dot, and Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 2. On top of all of that, I’ve got Oregon Symphony programs, including four Youth Concerts, Igudesman & Joo, and a program that includes the Miraculous Mandarin of Bartók. Phew! Luckily, the orchestra’s spring break comes right after that, so a little R&R will be just the ticket!
