the other carlos

And I don’t mean Carlos the Jackal. I’m referring to our guest conductor this week, the thoroughly enjoyable Carlos Miguel Prieto. We had a very unusual start to our first concert with Carlos in Portland tonight (we played in Salem Friday evening). As the lights came down, who should stroll out on stage instead of the usual presence of our president Elaine Calder? It was music director Carlos Kalmar who gave the greeting and introduction (and the sinister warning that he would be watching the patrons in case a cell phone were to ring during the concert). He departed the stage, and then the other Carlos came out, instead of our associate concertmaster Peter Frajola, and proceeded to tune the orchestra and sit down in the first chair. By this point the musicians in the orchestra were already laughing, and the audience was slowing getting the point that something was up. Then Peter came out, baton in hand, and traded off with the Prieto. It was a bit of hijinks that rarely happens at a symphonic concert, and was a lot of fun, at least for those of us on stage.

I won’t write anything in detail about this series of concerts until Sunday night, but I will encourage you to get a ticket if you haven’t already done so. Our guitar soloist, Sharon Isbin, is absolutely phenomenal – you will kick yourself if you don’t get to hear her. In addition, the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition will knock your freakin’ socks off. No kidding. If the Schnitz has a roof left by Monday night’s concert, I’ll be seriously surprised (and maybe a little bit disappointed, too).

triskaidekaphobia

Today is a crazy day, and not only because it’s Friday the 13th (gasp!). It’s one of those days that I knew was coming, and knew would be packed, but there was nothing I could do about it.

This morning I have the dress rehearsal for the Oregon Symphony’s upcoming concerts with guitarist Sharon Isbin (fantastic!) and our wonderful guest conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. Luckily, it’s not a taxing program, although it is a fun and varied one. Works by Ravel, Rodrigo, Gubaidulina, and Mussorgsky feature the many colors of the full symphony orchestra, and I’d urge you to snap up the remaining tickets quickly.

Right after the concert, my accompanist is picking me up at the stage door and we’re shooting down to a home south of Salem, (about 50 miles away) where we’ll do a small house concert for supporters of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem. Then, it’s back up to Portland so my accompanist (the wonderful and indefatigable Cary Lewis) can play a flute recital in the evening. I will grab my lunch/dinner at home, then head back down to Salem for our evening runout concert at Willamette University. Phew!

I will be decidedly ready for a stiff beverage when I get home tonight!

former concertmaster to join oso for final concerts of season

David Stabler of the Oregonian broke the story earlier today:

A good friend returns to Portland to close out the final concert of the Oregon Symphony’s 2011/12 season. Violinist Jun Iwasaki is scheduled to appear as guest concertmaster to lead the players in Igor Stravinsky’s famously furious “Rite of Spring,” May 20 and 21.

Iwasaki was a popular leader among his Oregon colleagues and audiences. Blessed with brilliant technique and agile musicianship, he held the orchestra’s concertmaster position from 2007 to 2011, before becoming concertmaster of the Nashville Symphony. He comes to Portland from New York, following Nashville’s performance at the 2012 “Spring for Music” festival in Carnegie Hall. Iwasaki played there with the Oregon Symphony during the festival’s inaugural season last May.

The “Rite of Spring” concert, led by music director Carlos Kalmar, includes Liszt/John Adams’ “The Black Gondola,” Adams’ “City Noir” and Antonin Dvorák’s “Nocturne.”
