A fantastic look at why the op. 131 quartet is such a great work in a terrific mini-lecture by UCLA professor Robert Winter. Well worth the 17 minutes.

And please join the Arnica Quartet for our free concert at the University of Portland’s Mago Hunt Recital Hall [map] on Wednesday, November 2nd at 12:30 as we play this great work!

* Arnica Quartet – A Late Quartet

Beethoven String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131

‘A Late Quartet’ – Spend an evening with the Arnica Quartet as they plumb the depths of Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. This quartet, regarded by Beethoven as his greatest compositional achievement, has seven linked movements, starting with a somber fugue and ending with a triumphant march-like finale. This quartet was the basis for the movie A Late Quartet (2012), which stars Mark Ivanir, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Christopher Walken, as the fictional Fugue String Quartet, in which rehearsing Beethoven’s C-sharp minor string quartet results in a crucial turning point in the life of the quartet. It was also the foundation of Mark Hollinger’s play Opus (2006) (which Portland Center Stage presented in 2011), which similarly delves into the hidden life of a full-time, professional string quartet.

This concert takes place at a private residence in the Beaverton/Cooper Mountain area.
Tickets are $75/person and very limited.
