lintu scores in NJ

I was forwarded an online review of Hannu Lintu‘s conducting debut with the New Jersey Symphony this past weekend. He’s an almost perennial favorite of the Oregon Symphony and its audiences, so I thought this might be of interest. I’m glad to hear that he’s on the radar for US conducting posts as well – he’s a real catch, and whoever lands him will be lucky indeed.

As the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra looks toward its final season under Neeme JÃ¤rvi, the search is on for a new music director. A possible future presented itself this weekend in the form of Hannu Lintu, who conducted one of the most breathtaking performances this listener has ever heard the orchestra give.

He’ll be here in Ph0enix in a few weeks – Nielsen 4, Tragic Overture and Emperor Concerto (with Leon Fleischer, no less.) Granted, Phoenix isn’t looking for an MD (Michael Christie was just extended up to 2015) but I’m looking forward to it all the same.

All I’d say is, give him a while to grow on you – he’s a bit flaily, but he still manages to show you just what he wants, and he’s got a great, droll, dry sense of humor, and he’s a terrific musician. I’m jealous – Nielson 4 with him should be a treat, and he and Fleischer should get along nicely in the Beethoven. Man, Fleischer is just a god – I worked with him at Tanglewood and at Peabody in chamber music situations, and grew up with his Brahms/Beethoven recordings. Good stuff…
