{"id":935,"date":"2008-04-19T16:47:51","date_gmt":"2008-04-19T23:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=935"},"modified":"2013-02-07T18:52:20","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T02:52:20","slug":"kalmar-prokofiev-earthshaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/19\/kalmar-prokofiev-earthshaking\/","title":{"rendered":"kalmar, prokofiev earthshaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past Friday, the St. Louis area was awakened by the shaking of a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.\u00c2\u00a0 That evening the St. Louis Symphony was led by OSO music director Carlos Kalmar in a performance that included the Fifth Symphony of Sergei Prokofiev.\u00c2\u00a0 According to this review and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/commentary-on-kalmarst-louis.html\">other accounts<\/a>, this may have been an aftershock of its own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Friday in St. Louis began with the tremors and aftershocks of an earthquake, and ended with an incandescent performance that shook the stage of Powell Symphony Hall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The first half of Friday night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s concert by guest conductor Carlos Kalmar and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra was fine. The second half was remarkable: What a difference the right repertoire in the right hands can make to a concert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That second half consisted of an incandescent performance of Serge Prokofiev\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, op. 100. Written during the waning days of World War II, the Symphony No. 5 is a symphonic masterpiece. This score has it all, from moments of big, sweeping grandeur to light humor, from passages of savage jeering to outright lyricism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Kalmar and the orchestra invested it with a sense of excitement beyond that inherent in the score.
