{"id":931,"date":"2008-04-17T10:15:41","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T17:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=931"},"modified":"2013-02-07T18:52:15","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T02:52:15","slug":"wordless-music-in-pdx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/17\/wordless-music-in-pdx\/","title":{"rendered":"wordless music in pdx"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wordless Music, a group that promotes cross-pollination amongst popular and classical music genres (to put it rather grotesquely) is presenting two concerts in Portland this week, on Thursday (tonight) the 17th and Friday the 18th of April, with the Friday concert featuring the Portland contemporary music ensemble <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/www.thirdangle.org\">Third Angle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what they are about, in their own words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Wordless Music Series is devoted to the idea that the sound worlds of classical and contemporary instrumental music \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in genres such as indie rock, free jazz, and electronic music \u00e2\u20ac\u201c share more in common than conventional thinking might suggest.  To illustrate the continuity between these worlds, the series will pair rock and electronic musicians in an intimate concert setting with more traditionally understood classical and chamber music performers.  In so doing, the series will bring together audiences and introduce listeners of both classical and contemporary music to composers they might not otherwise encounter, for a completely new concert experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sounds interesting, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Here are the particulars, lifted from their press release:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">On Thursday, April 17, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/starsofthelid\">Stars of the Lid<\/a> will perform with a string quartet and projections, on a program opened by electronic composer and Ghostly recording artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/www.christopherwillits.com\">Christopher Willits<\/a>. Also appearing will be members of Portland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/profile.myspace.com\/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&amp;friendid=298357844\">Classical Revolution PDX<\/a>, to perform Shostakovich\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s String Quartet No. 8 in C minor and Arvo P\u00c3\u00a4rt&#8217;s Spiegel im Spiegel for piano and viola.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The two-day kickoff event continues on Friday, April 18, at the Old Church, where Portland native and Wordless Music favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/eluviumtaken\">Eluvium<\/a> will make his second appearance for the series, on a program with local new-music ensemble Third Angle, which will perform chamber music by Chen Yi, Zoltan Kod\u00c3\u00a1ly, and Portland composers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/www.tomassvoboda.com\">Tomas Svoboda<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/www.davidschiffmusic.com\">David Schiff<\/a>.
