Paul Burnett\/The New York Times<\/em><\/p>\n<p>British composer phenom Thomas Ad\u00c3\u00a9s (age 37) is presenting a concert of his music at Carnegie Hall&#8217;s Zankel Hall with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group on Friday, March 29th.  The New York Times&#8217; Vivien Schweitzer writes this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/23\/arts\/music\/23schw.html?ex=1363924800&amp;en=a2e471e2fe209ba5&amp;ei=5124&amp;partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">article<\/a> about his background and ethos in today&#8217;s edition of the paper.  Here are a few of my favorite observations from the article:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We never seem to get over looking for the next <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" title=\"More articles about Benjamin Britten\">Benjamin Britten<\/a>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Robert Saxton, an English composer who taught Mr. Ad\u00c3\u00a8s at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a stupid game. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an English disease that goes with the class system, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not surprised that Tom has been pushed into that position.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; His father is a linguist and translator, and his mother, Dawn Ad\u00c3\u00a8s, an authority on Surrealist art.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the only \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcism\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that I feel at all comfortable with,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Mr. Ad\u00c3\u00a8s said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Writing and playing music at all is completely surreal. You are sort of sculpting in air, which gives you complete freedom to do what you want.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; Mr. Ad\u00c3\u00a8s often favors programmatic titles; others include \u00e2\u20ac\u0153These Premises Are Alarmed,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d applied to a particularly rambunctious work, another example of his ability to combine a seemingly endless range of beguiling sonorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sometimes I think, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcShall I just call it Sonata and have done with it?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But then, of course, the trouble is that that can be a little bit blah. And then people are liable to say, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcOh, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Neo-Classical,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and bang, you have a label, and that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very damaging. It had a damaging effect on how some of Stravinsky\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s greatest music was received for a long time, as people thought there was a going backward involved.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been very taken with those works of his that I&#8217;ve been able to hear on recording so far, including <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/album.jsp?album_id=7874\">Asyla<\/a>,<\/em> the string quartet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/album.jsp?album_id=183495\"><em>Arcadiana<\/em><\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1206303391&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Piano Quintet<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>G.
