I really could care less if people clap between movements. If they’re moved and love what they’ve heard so far, let them clap! This whole sterile, isolation chamber version of what a live concert experience should be is ridiculous. Stay home and listen to a recording if you don’t want to hear applause in places where “it doesn’t belong”. I want to know the audience is out there, enjoying themselves, and are fully invested in what is being performed for them. Sure, there are times where it might “ruin” the mood, but most of the time, it’s just fine.
