Aside from that, however, I’ve been discovering the joy of doing two things that I love very much: practicing the viola, and riding my bike. I’ve been in sort of a self-imposed state of stasis in both activities – the lousy weather (until this weekend) has kept me from putting in the miles I’d envisioned for myself by this point (I’m only just under 500 miles for the year now, which is easily half of what I’d been able to do last year, but then the weather was better). And so far as practicing goes, I’ve been afraid, I think, to explore the possibilities of what would happen if I actually fully realized my potential. Each year I am able to do some things better than the year before, and as long as I’m able to continue to improve, why not go for it? So, that’s where I am. I’ve got another week that’s largely free of playing obligations, so I’m hoping to use that time to do some hardcore work.
