{"id":6277,"date":"2011-04-28T20:52:27","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T00:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/?p=6277"},"modified":"2013-02-07T20:45:37","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T04:45:37","slug":"opus-at-portland-center-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/28\/opus-at-portland-center-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"opus at portland center stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Note: this is a repost of one of the lost posts from my database mishap.]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Opus Trailer\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/22459168?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Last Wednesday night I had the pleasure of attending\u00a0<strong>OPUS<\/strong>, the current play running at\u00a0<strong>Portland<\/strong> <strong>Center<\/strong> <strong>Stage<\/strong>. It\u2019s a short play (it runs about 90 minutes) that examines the inner workings of a top-rank string quartet. It was a very enjoyable experience, and a play that can be enjoyed by both insiders and those who don\u2019t know a thing about classical music and the string quartet. The actors all did a great job of syncing their movements to the soundtrack (in some really complex music, I might add), and the dialogue was dramatic without resorting to cliches and hyperbole in order to achieve its aims. While the discussions in my string quartet are hardly as heated as they become in the fictional Lazara Quartet, the drama very accurately portrays how outside pressures can boil over in the intimate confines of the string quartet.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite line from the play: \u201cThat guy didn\u2019t play music, he extruded notes.
