{"id":5944,"date":"2011-03-08T22:51:48","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T06:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/?p=5944"},"modified":"2013-02-07T20:38:23","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T04:38:23","slug":"calder-quartet-in-portland-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/08\/calder-quartet-in-portland-residency\/","title":{"rendered":"calder quartet in portland residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/index.php\">Calder Quartet<\/a> &#8211; lately of Los Angeles (by way of LA, NYC, and Berlin) &#8211; is doing a residency in Portland which will culminate in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.focm.org\/cla4_10.htm\">performances<\/a> for Portland Friends of Chamber Music on Monday, March 14th and Tuesday, March 15th (7:30 p.m. both nights) at Portland State University&#8217;s Lincoln Performance Hall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5946\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/CasSeated.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5946\" title=\"CasSeated\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/CasSeated-400x265.jpg?resize=400%2C265\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calder Quartet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more-->The residency begins with a free concert in the Collins Gallery at the Multnomah County Central Library on Saturday, March 12th from 2:00 &#8211; 3:00 p.m. Space will be limited, so it would be advisable to show up early to get a seat.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the quartet will be &#8220;quartet in residence for a day&#8221; at the Portland Art Museum. They will perform several works in different gallery spaces throughout the museum on Sunday, March 13th between 3:00 &#8211; 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there will be an open rehearsal at Lincoln Performance Hall at Portland State University, from 11:00 a.m. &#8211; 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 14th. It is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The two concerts (tickets available online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketmaster.com\/Friends-Of-Chamber-Music-Present-Calder-Quartet-tickets\/artist\/1459112\">here<\/a>) illustrate the Calders&#8217; dedication both to established canonical repertoire and to exploring works both new and less familiar to many listeners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5947\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/JacobTV-2007.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5947\" title=\"JacobTV-2007\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/JacobTV-2007-250x312.jpg?resize=250%2C312\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JacobTV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most interestingly, the first concert has at its center the Quartet No. 3 <em>&#8220;There must be some way out of here&#8221;<\/em> by the Dutch composer\u00a0Jacob ter Veldhuis,\u00a0a.k.a. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/www.jacobtv.net\">JacobTV<\/a>. Veldhuis started as a rock musician, but soon became interested in (and studied) composition and electronic music. He&#8217;s most well-known for he dislike for the modernist compositional soundscape, and favors melodious music with little in the way of dissonance. He is quote as saying &#8220;I pepper my music with sugar&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5948\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fred3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5948\" title=\"fred3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fred3-250x333.jpg?resize=250%2C333\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred Frith - Photo: \u00a9 Heike Liss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the second concert, which features one of my favorite quartets &#8211; the Quartet No. 2 <em>&#8220;Intimate Letters&#8221;<\/em> by Janacek &#8211; has another newer composition, this time by the British composer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/www.fredfrith.com\">Fred Frith<\/a> (also, like Veldhuis, a rocker turned composer) &#8211; his String Quartet No. 1 <em>&#8220;Lelekovice&#8221;<\/em>, Op. 20. Frith cut his teeth with such New York composers as John Zorn, Ikue Mori, and Bruce Ostertag.
