it was a fabulous performance. The work was flanked by two Beethoven Quartets, which the Chiaras are presenting in a complete cycle at Harvard University this season. The Op. 18, no. 6 quartet opened the concert, always one of my favorites for its energetic first movement, delightful slow movement theme and variations, cross rhythmic scherzo, and the last movement La malinconia introduction. I have always thought of it as an early period version of what would be more fleshed out in his late quartets. The concert concluded with Beethoven’s great op. 130 string quartet with the original Grosse Fuge ending, which was given a ferocious reading of great intensity and emotion. It was a great evening.

On Tuesday night I had the great pleasure to hear the premiere of a new string quartet written by my long time friend Daniel Ott. I’ve known Dan since he was in high school (then a french horn player in my former youth orchestra in Tacoma). Now, he’s on the faculty of the Juilliard School […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[148,136,135
2521,2428,2522,3674
post-5779","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-appreciations","category-chamber-music","category-soloists-recitals","tag-chiara-quartet","tag-daniel-ott","tag-premiere","tag-seattle
Composer Daniel Ott Friend and composer Daniel Ott, whose new work for string quartet, solo violin, and piano (á la Chausson) entitled Blue Water is being given its world premiere at the venerable Bargemusic concerts in New York City this weekend, deserves a shout-out from this blog. Way to go,…
You still have the opportunity to pick up a ticket or two to the Arnica Quartet's Parallels: Music of Daniel Ott & Benjamin Britten concert on Friday evening (8 p.m.) at the Community Music Center's Recital Hall.
