schumann on the oregon coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5312\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5312\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/P1030843.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5312\" title=\"P1030843\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/P1030843-400x300.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonathan Dubay and Cary Lewis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday I joined the Three Centuries Ensemble (Jonathan Dubay, violin, Gregory Dubay, cello, and Cary Lewis, piano) for an afternoon of music by Ernest Bloch and Robert Schumann in a lovely seaside home in Coronado Shores on the Oregon coast.\u00a0 It was one of those rare days on the coast, where the abundant sunshine, combined with balmy temperatures and a lack of wind made for a magical day that I likened to visits to Santa Barbara.\u00a0 Nevertheless, we had a packed house full of eager concertgoers to hear the afternoon&#8217;s fare.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5305\" style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Ernest-Bloch.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5305\" title=\"Ernest-Bloch\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Ernest-Bloch-313x400.jpg?resize=313%2C400\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ernest Bloch near his home at Agate Beach, Oregon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The music of Bloch is easy to program when you&#8217;re on the Oregon coast, as he lived his final 20 years in nearby Agate Beach (from 1939 to 1959), writing, among other works, the second of his two Piano Quintets and his unfinished solo Sonata for viola.\u00a0 Jonathan Dubay opened the program with <em>Simchas Torah<\/em>, from <em>Baal Shem<\/em> for violin and piano, a work that was very appropriate to the concert falling within the high holy week of the Jewish calendar.\u00a0 I followed with the <em>Three Romances<\/em>, op. 94 of Robert Schumann, originally written for oboe.\u00a0 Completing the half was Jonathan with Schumann&#8217;s Sonata in A minor, op. 105 for violin and piano.\u00a0 After the cookie and coffee-filled intermission, all four of us joined to play Schumann&#8217;s great Piano Quartet in E-flat major.\u00a0 The final work on the program was placed to honor the sentiments of the fateful day &#8211;
