{"id":524,"date":"2007-11-08T19:16:23","date_gmt":"2007-11-09T02:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/11\/08\/jim-palermo-on-growing-audiences\/"},"modified":"2013-02-07T18:20:16","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T02:20:16","slug":"jim-palermo-on-growing-audiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/11\/08\/jim-palermo-on-growing-audiences\/","title":{"rendered":"jim palermo on growing audiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just caught this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/2322\">article<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/index.shtml\">Grant Park Music Festiva<\/a>l Artistic and General Director Jim Palermo at the excellent Chicago Classical Music blog (maybe Portland should have one of these&#8230;hint, hint) concerning finding and nurturing audiences for classical music.<\/p>\n<p>These paragraphs are what I see as the crux of the matter (emphases mine):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The good news as reported by Stager is that overall, repertory is more important than guest artists.  That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s good news because guest artist fees, especially for the big names, have skyrocketed past our ability to recoup them at the box office.  Stager says <strong>the best selling concerts are those that match a big name with a mega popular piece<\/strong>.  Yes, Perlman playing the Tchaikovsky Concerto will pack \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcem in.  <\/p>\n<p>I always wonder at badly attended concerts why the marketing didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work.  Then, I realize at all Mozart concerts or when people cram the aisles to hear Boler\u00c3\u00b3 that audiences are shrewd, selective consumers.  People know what they like and act accordingly.  <strong>Never underestimate the intelligence of your audience<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also what I find hopeful: Stager says that <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153an institution\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unwavering will to present interesting programs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c not simply popular ones\u00e2\u20ac\u009d builds audiences over time<\/strong>.
