{"id":4954,"date":"2010-07-05T20:55:43","date_gmt":"2010-07-06T03:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/?p=4954"},"modified":"2010-07-05T20:55:43","modified_gmt":"2010-07-06T03:55:43","slug":"luftpause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/05\/luftpause\/","title":{"rendered":"Luftpause"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4955\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/1277851249.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4955\" title=\"1277851249\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/1277851249-200x201.jpg?resize=200%2C201\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomas Quasthoff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We got back to Portland on Sunday in the late afternoon (lots of holiday traffic on the interstate, in spite of having left before 2 p.m.), and there was the usual frenzy of unpacking, and cleaning, and laundry. \u00a0We had our traditional delivered pizza, and watched crappy tv as a way of celebrating being home.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, I head down to Eugene for the final concerts of the Oregon Bach Festival: Mendelssohn&#8217;s great oratorio Elijah, performed in Portland on Friday evening, and in Eugene on Saturday afternoon. \u00a0I&#8217;m very excited for this performance, because one of my favorite singers of all time, Thomas Quasthoff, is singing the\u00a0title role in these performances. \u00a0I&#8217;ve always been blown away by his singing, ever since I first heard him sing with us in an Rilling-led OSO performance of Haydn&#8217;s <em>The Creation<\/em> back in 1996. \u00a0I wish that Rilling would come back and conduct the OSO again &#8211; I imagine that he would scarcely recognize the great orchestra that we&#8217;ve become over the last 14 years! \u00a0It will be nice to get to see some musicians who I haven&#8217;t seen since my last OBF performances, which date back to the second performance of Penderecki&#8217;s <em>Credo<\/em> (with the composer conducting) and Rilling&#8217;s performance of Mahler 2.<\/p>\n<p>My viola has been resting in his case since Saturday afternoon, recovering from all that I inflicted on him for the previous week. \u00a0But tomorrow will mean some new insults in the form of practicing the tricky bits from the 2-1\/2 hour Elijah in between the many errands that must be completed during the day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4957\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Helmuthmed.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4957\" title=\"Helmuthmed\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Helmuthmed-200x270.jpg?resize=200%2C270\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helmut Rilling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We got back to Portland on Sunday in the late afternoon (lots of holiday traffic on the interstate, in spite of having left before 2 p.m.), and there was the usual frenzy of unpacking, and cleaning, and laundry. \u00a0We had our traditional delivered pizza, and watched crappy tv as a way of celebrating being home.
