concert two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday night&#8217;s concert was especially meaningful in regards to its location in Astoria, as it was devoted to the music of two giants of Scandinavian composers: Grieg and Sibelius.\u00a0 Astoria is steeped in the traditions of Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, with many immigrants from those nations choosing the settle in what must have been comforting climatic reminders of their homelands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4844\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sepia_big.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4844\" title=\"sepia_big\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/sepia_big-250x325.jpg?resize=250%2C325\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elizabeth Pitcairn \/ Photo: Christian Steiner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn was the soloist in the lovely and imposing violin concerto of Jean Sibelius.\u00a0 She handled all of its considerable technical and musical hurdles with no sense of difficulty, even with some discrepancies between her tempos and those of the orchestra as a whole.\u00a0 She was given a well-deserved ovation at the conclusion of the concerto, and was also given quite the hearty round of applause between the first and second movements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4845\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4845\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/stiers.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4845\" title=\"stiers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/stiers.jpg?resize=200%2C226\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Ogden Stiers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second half of the concert was entirely given over to a complete performance of Edvard Grieg&#8217;s complete <em>Incidental Music to Peer Gynt<\/em>.\u00a0 There was practically a three-ring circus on stage (conductor Keith Clark jokingly noted that only a few wild animals were missing from the assemblage of personnel on stage), with dancers, three choruses (including the Ultima Thule Chorale from Norway) and vocal soloist Amy Hansen and narrator David Ogden Stiers.\u00a0 Stiers gave great inflection to the story of Peer Gynt, lending both gravity and levity to his colorful characterizations.\u00a0 Amy Hansen sang wonderfully, as did the North Coast Chorale and the singers of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/apprentice.html\">Astoria Music Festival Apprentice Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4846\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/amyhansenbwweb.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4846 \" title=\"amyhansenb&amp;wweb\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/amyhansenbwweb-250x321.jpg?resize=200%2C257\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amy Hansen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The festival continues through this week and next weekend with the following performances:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Astoria Music Festival Chamber Players<\/strong><br \/>\nSunday, June 20 @ 4 pm<br \/>\nwith Elizabeth Pitcairn and Richard Zeller<br \/>\nMusic of Beethoven, Brahms and Korngold<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vocal Apprentice Artists Opera Scenes<\/strong><br \/>\nTuesday, June 22 @ 7:30 pm<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Too Much Coffee Man<\/em> and Bach for More<\/strong><br \/>\nWednesday, June 23 @ 7:30 pm<br \/>\nFirst opera based upon a comic book and Bach&#8217;s Coffee Cantata<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vienna&#8217;s Sacred Spring &#8211;
