<em>Music for a Scene from Shelly<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Antonin Dvorak<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Cello Concerto<\/em>, Quirine Viersen, cellist<br \/>\n<strong>Aaron Jay Kernis<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Newly Drawn Sky<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Leonard Bernstein<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Suite from On the Waterfront<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last night (Saturday) we played the first concert of this week&#8217;s classical series run.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an interesting program, all related to American music or America.\u00a0 Three of the works (Barber, Kernis and Bernstein) were written by American composers, and the Dvorak concerto was largely written in New York City.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4629\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4629\" style=\"width: 162px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Samuel-Barber.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4629\" title=\"Samuel Barber\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Samuel-Barber.jpg?resize=162%2C216\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samuel Barber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Barber is an incredibly powerful and beautiful piece.\u00a0 The writing, one can tell, is obviously influenced by the famous Philadelphia sound being cultivated by Leopold Stowkowski, with lush string writing and powerful brass climaxes (though it received its premiere with the New York Philharmonic).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a piece that you don&#8217;t often get to hear live, and it is totally worth it to experience the rich orchestral tapestry in the concert hall.\u00a0 It is quite amazing that Barber showed this sort of mastery at the tender age of 23.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4628\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/dvorak_antonin1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4628\" title=\"dvorak_antonin1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/dvorak_antonin1-200x340.jpg?resize=200%2C340\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antonin Dvorak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Dvorak is a piece that needs no introduction, but the cellist does.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quirineviersen.com\/bio.html\">Quirine Viersen<\/a>, a Dutch cellist, is making her US debut in these concerts.\u00a0 Her playing of the piece is deeply heartfelt, technically commanding, and musically complex and interesting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4455\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/QuirineViersen_2_orig_credit_Marco_Borggreve.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4455\" title=\"QuirineViersen_2_orig_credit_Marco_Borggreve\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/QuirineViersen_2_orig_credit_Marco_Borggreve-200x299.jpg?resize=200%2C299\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quirine Viersen - Photo: Marco Borggreve<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jun Iwaski&#8217;s duets with the solo cello were spirited and avoided the typical grandstanding overplaying that they often get from other concertmasters.\u00a0 Quirine stays on for the Beethoven <em>Triple Concerto<\/em> with Jun Iwasaki and Arnaldo Cohen in next week&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/packageDetail.aspx?pkg=135\">Beethoven Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4630\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/kernis_aaronjay_0809.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4630\" title=\"kernis_aaronjay_0809\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/kernis_aaronjay_0809.jpg?resize=275%2C170\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aaron Jay Kernis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aaron Jay Kernis is a favorite contemporary composer of Carlos&#8217;, and <em>Newly Drawn Sky<\/em> is one of several of Kernis&#8217; works he has recorded with the Grant Park Festival Orchestra.\u00a0 It&#8217;s another piece, like the Barber, that is immensely colorful and evocative, and shows off the orchestra to great effect.\u00a0 The percussion section (augmented by two players) gets a big workout in this piece, and they did a great job last night.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4631\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/bernstein200.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4631\" title=\"bernstein200\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/bernstein200.jpg?resize=200%2C263\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leonard Bernstein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, Bernstein&#8217;s On the Waterfront Suite is one of his most powerful and impressive pieces, consisting of several episodes that were truncated during the editing process of the stunning Elia Kazan film starring Marlon Brando, Karl Maden, Rod Steiger, and Eve Marie Saint.\u00a0 Principal horn John Cox sounds amazing in the opening horn solo, as does Assistant principal flutist Alicia DiDonato Paulsen in her beautiful love scene solos.\u00a0 Principal Trumpet Jeffrey Work deserves notice, too, for his powerful lead trumpet playing at the shattering conclusion to the Suite.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Oregonian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/music_review_quirine_viersen_v.html\">review<\/a> of last night&#8217;s concert.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Barber &#8211;
