But Kalmar, who was making his  subscription series debut as a replacement for <a id=\"PEHST001762\" title=\"Esa-Pekka Salonen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/esa-pekka-salonen-PEHST001762.topic\">Esa-Pekka  Salonen<\/a> (who canceled for personal reasons), lifted them beyond the  ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>The <a id=\"PLTRA0000121\" title=\"Grant Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/grant-park-PLTRA0000121.topic\">Grant  Park<\/a> Music Festival&#8217;s principal conductor brought vivacity and  color to three dances from Falla&#8217;s &#8220;El Amor Brujo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The sense of  storybook fantasy in Ravel&#8217;s complete &#8220;Mother Goose&#8221; was heightened by  the precision of detail as well as the shimmering refinement supplied by  the woodwinds in particular. Voluptuousness and menace combined to  potent effect in the same composer&#8217;s &#8220;La Valse,&#8221; that richly colored  portrait of prewar Vienna on the brink of cataclysm.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Andrew Patner &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/2167414,cso-hubbard-street-041610.article\"><em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em><\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cso-and-hubbard-street-dance-together-again-for-the-sixth-time-with-cerrudobates-premi%C3%A8re.html\"><em>The View From Here<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is also an unusual week because an otherwise familiar  Chicago podium figure was making his CSO subscription concerts debut.  \u00a0Grant Park Music Festival principal conductor Carlos Kalmar was a  last-minute substitute for Finland\u2019s Esa-Pekka Salonen, who withdrew  from these concerts for undisclosed personal reasons. \u00a0Kalmar,  celebrating his 10th season at Grant Park this summer, is also music  director of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and took up the set program  without changes. \u00a0The Three Dances from Falla\u2019s <em>El amor brujo<\/em> (1915-1916) found the Uruguayan-born conductor at home rhythmically and  harmonically. \u00a0Perhaps it was a general lessening of tension after the  excitement of the dance work, but the complete <em>Mother Goose<\/em> ballet (1910-11) seemed slow going, albeit with beautiful solos from  many section leaders. \u00a0The same composer\u2019s <em>La valse <\/em>(1919-20)  clearly speaks to Kalmar\u2019s Viennese roots and training; he knows this  work should not sound too \u201cFrench.\u201d \u00a0But the apocalypse came a bit  early. \u00a0If you get going too quickly in this piece, all you can do is  then go even faster, and that\u2019s not its or Ravel\u2019s point.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UPDATE: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/today-was-the-last-night-for-the-concert-with-carlos-kalmar\">A Single Delight<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today was the last night for the concert with Carlos Kalmar conducting  Falla\u2019s Three Dances from <em>El Amor Brujo<\/em> and Ravel\u2019s <em>Mother  Goose<\/em> and <em>La Valse<\/em>, plus a special performance by <em>Deep  Down Dos<\/em> \u2013 a dance group, who danced to Mason Bates\u2019 <em>Music from  Underground Spaces<\/em>.
