{"id":3427,"date":"2009-11-28T14:54:27","date_gmt":"2009-11-28T22:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/?p=3427"},"modified":"2013-02-07T20:01:48","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T04:01:48","slug":"jennifer-koh-and-the-excitement-of-the-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2009\/11\/28\/jennifer-koh-and-the-excitement-of-the-new\/","title":{"rendered":"jennifer koh and the excitement of the new"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Violinist Jennifer Koh (last heard with the Oregon Symphony in performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto, and before that the Szymanowski 1st Violin Concerto) has a new solo recording out on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/index1.php\">Cedille Records<\/a>, entitled <em>Rhapsodic Musings<\/em>.\u00a0 It features works by Elliot Carter, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Augusta Read Thomas, and John Zorn for solo violin.\u00a0 Based upon her performances with my orchestra and her previous recording (also on Cedille, <em>String Poetic<\/em>), it&#8217;s something that any fan of the violin and newer music will greatly enjoy (especially as a stocking stuffer&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Excerpt of an interview from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sequenza21.com\/index.php\/2238\">Sequenza 21<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>S21<\/strong>: You\u2019ve got quite a wide repertoire at your command, but when it\u2019s come to recordings you haven\u2019t gone with much in the way of the grand war-horses. The Szymanowski 1st is about as close as you\u2019ve come, the rest delving back into lesser-known gems by Menotti, Martinu, Bartok\u2026 And then most recently lots of contemporary (and usually living) American and European composers. The pieces you choose \u2014 Higdon, Ruggles, Harrison, Salonen, Carter, Zorn \u2014 while often incredibly beautiful aren\u2019t the stuff of easy crowd-pleasers. I get a bit of this feeling of you truly being taken deeply by something in each of these works, and bringing them to people almost like an excited kid shares their latest amazing discovery to their friends or parents.
