{"id":3332,"date":"2009-11-11T19:37:21","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T03:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=3332"},"modified":"2009-11-11T19:49:52","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T03:49:52","slug":"on-auditioning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2009\/11\/11\/on-auditioning\/","title":{"rendered":"on auditioning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s been quiet here at the blog for some time, so I thought it might be a good thing to tell you what I&#8217;ve been up to.\u00a0 I went down to Los Angeles this past Sunday to take the audition for the 3rd chair viola position (Assistant principal) of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Monday.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t win.\u00a0 Not even close.\u00a0 But I played well, and I was in plenty of good company, for this is a plum spot in arguably the best financially positioned orchestra in the world, with a great, iconic performing space, and the hottest young conductor in the world in his first year as music director.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, someone on Twitter tweeted a line from the television program 30 Rock: &#8220;An audition is a grotesque carnival of human misery&#8221;.\u00a0 Truer words have never been spoken.\u00a0 No matter what you do as a performer &#8211; playing an instrument, singing, acting, even presenting a visual arts portfolio &#8211; being called out onto the stage to play little snippets of music as technically perfect, yet ineffably musical as possible while under the most intense pressures &#8211; including money, vanity, reputation, personal neuroses, disappointing your favorite teacher &#8211; is one of the most excruciating and unrewarding activities that humans voluntarily deign to undergo.\u00a0 A couple years ago I auditioned for a similar position with the Seattle Symphony, which you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/22\/auditioning-for-middle-farts\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/23\/auditioning-for-middle-farts-part-deux\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/24\/auditioning-for-middle-farts-part-troix\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/25\/afmf-climax-and-denouement\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll give no similar blow-by-blow this time, I just don&#8217;t have it in me.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve emerged from another fruitless, grotesque carnival with my playing raised to a new level, and with a recital program beginning to form in my mind that I&#8217;m very excited to start working towards.\u00a0 Besides, I love my orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, my first and only real job as a musician, and I have many wonderful colleagues and friends that it would have pained me greatly to leave, so life goes on, and I am content.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few snapshots that I took during the afternoon after my role in the audition came to an abrupt end:<!--more--><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s been quiet here at the blog for some time, so I thought it might be a good thing to tell you what I&#8217;ve been up to.\u00a0 I went down to Los Angeles this past Sunday to take the audition for the 3rd chair viola position (Assistant principal) of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":303,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[238,2,22],"tags":[313,3660],"class_list":["post-3332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-auditions","category-the-orchestra-world","category-viola","tag-los-angeles-philharmonic","tag-viola"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/pa8kC-RK","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_likes_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":651,"url":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/01\/09\/new-principal-viola-for-la\/","url_meta":{"origin":3332,"position":0},"title":"new principal viola for LA","author":"Charles Noble","date":"January 9, 2008","format":false,"excerpt":"Carrie Dennis, currently one of the principal violists of the Berlin Philharmonic (you might have seen her on the front desk for Monday's broadcast of the BPO's Mahler 9 with Simon Rattle), has been hired as the new principal viola of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
