{"id":2914,"date":"2009-07-28T00:15:13","date_gmt":"2009-07-28T07:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=2914"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:51:06","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:51:06","slug":"the-season-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2009\/07\/28\/the-season-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"the season ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m starting to actually get used to the idea that another season is coming and I&#8217;d better get going on thinking about it!\u00a0 So, I&#8217;ll give a few of the upcoming highlights for some of the various musical organizations around Portland that I have information for as I get myself oriented for the upcoming season of classical music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamber Music Northwest &#8211; Encore Series<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmnw.org\/09emerson.html\" target=\"_blank\">Emerson String Quartet<\/a> (Oct. 26, 2009) &#8211; always solid performances, often revelatory and often that magical combination of sublime and virtuosic at the same time.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmnw.org\/09tallis.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tallis Scholars<\/a> (Dec. 7, 2009) &#8211; I&#8217;ve never heard them live, maybe this will be the year, but such flawless singing and blend &#8211; I&#8217;ve been a fan of their recordings for years.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/www.cmnw1.org\">www.cmnw.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Friends of Chamber Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.focm.org\/cla1_09.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Borealis Quartet<\/a> (Oct. 12, 13, 2009) &#8211; it&#8217;s always a great treat to hear a new, young string quartet.\u00a0 This Canadian group should prove no exception.\u00a0 A couple of rarity on the first evening&#8217;s program piqued my interest: Ottorino Respighi&#8217;s <em>Quartetto Dorico<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/focm.org\/cla3_09.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Takacs Quartet<\/a> (Dec. 7, 8, 2009) &#8211; the Takacs has always been one of my favorite quartets, and when they joined with one of my favorite violists in the world &#8211; Geraldine Walther &#8211; it only improved their stock with me.\u00a0 Add to this the fact that they&#8217;re playing two of my most beloved quartets: Bart\u00f3k&#8217;s Fourth and the Schumann A major, it&#8217;s a gimme.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/www.focm.org\">www.focm.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Portland Columbia Symphony<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/concerts09_10.php#rf\" target=\"_blank\">Viennese Migrations<\/a> (April 30, 2010) &#8211; two great works: the Sinfonia concertante of Mozart and Brahm&#8217;s mighty and sunny Second Symphony will be a great test of the orchestra&#8217;s progress under music director Huw Edwards, and it will be a great treat to hear OSO musicians In\u00e9s Voglar and Jo\u00ebl Belgique (who also happen to be husband and wife) make beautiful music together in the Mozart.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/www.columbiasymphony.org\">www.columbiasymphony.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Portland Opera<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/trouble-tahiti\" target=\"_blank\">Trouble in Tahiti<\/a> (Mar. &#8211; Apr., 2010) &#8211; a great opportunity to hear this one-act opera by Leonard Bernstein.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/www.portlandopera.org\">www.portlandopera.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Third Angle New Music Ensemble<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/09-10-season-announced.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hearing Voices<\/a> (Jan. 22, 2010) &#8211; any of their four concerts in 09-10 would be great to hear, but I&#8217;m particularly intrigued by the combination of the written word and music that Ron Blessinger has brought together, most especially the collaboration of two Portland artists &#8211; author Ursula LeGuin and composer Bryan Johansen &#8211; in <em>Ride the Red Mare.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/www.thirdangle.org\">www.thirdangle.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Portland Piano International Recital Series<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/portlandpiano.org\/recital\/09_10\/artist02_biss.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Biss<\/a> (Nov. 1, 2009) &#8211; he&#8217;s received rave reviews just about everywhere he&#8217;s concertized over the past few years, and he&#8217;s known as both a cerebral and visceral performer.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/portlandpiano.org\/recital\/09_10\/artist04_kim.html\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Kim<\/a> (Mar. 7, 2010) &#8211;
