{"id":1989,"date":"2009-02-28T00:14:48","date_gmt":"2009-02-28T08:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1989"},"modified":"2009-03-03T12:09:27","modified_gmt":"2009-03-03T20:09:27","slug":"mendelssohn-profundity-without-angst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2009\/02\/28\/mendelssohn-profundity-without-angst\/","title":{"rendered":"mendelssohn &#8211; profundity without angst?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got back a couple hours ago from working on the great op. 13 quartet of the young Felix Mendelssohn, and it never fails to amaze me how great a composer he is without often falling into the Germanic need for angst and suffering in his art.\u00c2\u00a0 One of my favorite parts of the quartet is the slow introduction which opens the work, and which then reappears at the very close, book-ending the piece.\u00c2\u00a0 It turns out that the tune of the introduction is borrowed from one of his early op. 9 songs (No. 1 <em>Frage <\/em>or <em>Question<\/em>).\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lovely little setting of a text by Mendelssohn&#8217;s friend Johnann Heinrich Voss:  <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ist es wahr? Ist es wahr?<br \/>\nDa\u00c3\u0178 du stets dort in dem Laubgang,<br \/>\nAn der Weinwand meiner harrst?<br \/>\nUnd den Mondschein und die Sternlein<br \/>\nAuch nach mir befragst?<br \/>\nIst es wahr? Sprich!<br \/>\nWas ich f\u00c3\u00bchle, das begreift nur,<br \/>\nDie es mit f\u00c3\u00bchlt,<br \/>\nUnd die treu mir ewig,<br \/>\nTreu mir ewig, ewig bleibt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Is it true? Is it true<br \/>\nthat over there in the leafy walkway, you always<br \/>\nwait for me by the vine-draped wall?<br \/>\nAnd that with the moonlight and the little stars<br \/>\nyou consult about me also?<br \/>\nIs it true? Speak!<br \/>\nWhat I feel, only she grasps &#8212;<br \/>\nshe who feels with me<br \/>\nand stays ever faithful to me,<br \/>\neternally faithful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Translation \u00c2\u00a9 Emily Ezust<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/255439x.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-2036\" title=\"255439x\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/255439x-200x258.jpg?resize=200%2C258\" alt=\"255439x\" width=\"200\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n[click to enlarge]<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This also reminds me (the use of this song and its melodic contour) of the Beethoven Op. 135 Quartet, with its <em>Mu\u00ce\u00b2 es Sein?<\/em> and <em>Es Mu\u00ce\u00b2 Sein!<\/em> (Must it Be?
