{"id":1434,"date":"2008-11-15T15:21:03","date_gmt":"2008-11-15T23:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1434"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:08:39","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:08:39","slug":"conductor-fashion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/11\/15\/conductor-fashion\/","title":{"rendered":"conductor fashion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1435\" title=\"0008h\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/0008h.jpg?resize=250%2C394\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"394\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Hopefully this guy is NOT appearing on a podium near you!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This week we&#8217;re working with a very pleasant guest conductor, the Austrian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/www.christophcampestrini.com\">Christoph Campestrini<\/a>, who wears a pretty unique apparel item for a conductor: the polo shirt. \u00c2\u00a0They might be striped, solid colors, or in patterns. \u00c2\u00a0I have not run into another conductor who wears polo shirts on the podium. \u00c2\u00a0Thankfully, it&#8217;s not yet another black turtleneck!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/08.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1438\" title=\"08\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/08-400x265.jpg?resize=400%2C265\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><em>Christoph Campestrini in his polo shirt<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/08.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What else is on liable to see on the podium? \u00c2\u00a0Our music director Carlos Kalmar is partial to t-shirts with festival and\/or orchestra logos on them &#8211; I&#8217;m figuring he must have several dozen of them by now &#8211; the array keeps on growing. \u00c2\u00a0He may soon get to the point where no shirt will be worn more than once per season in rotation!<\/p>\n<p>The black turtleneck was once all the rage amongst young conductors, but they&#8217;ve tended more towards button-down oxfords lately. \u00c2\u00a0Former OSO resident conductor Murry Sidlin used to have a conducting &#8220;smock&#8221; that he wore over a turtleneck or other shirt. \u00c2\u00a0It literally looked like it might have been a more upscale artist&#8217;s over-shirt. \u00c2\u00a0I think it was a grayish color.<\/p>\n<p>James DePreist mostly wears what we call &#8220;Cosby&#8221; sweaters &#8211; thick knit, with large, bright patterns, and undoubtedly fine and expensive. \u00c2\u00a0I would figure it would get hot conducting in one of those, but at the same time it must be very comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/bcosby_l.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1439\" title=\"bcosby_l\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/bcosby_l.jpg?resize=300%2C400\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Word is that Gunther Schuller wore the same, disgusting shirt for entire runs of his festival or guest appearances &#8211; it must be some sort of superstition or something, but then again, maybe the shirt is moving his arms for him?<\/p>\n<p>Aside from shirts, the other thing to watch for with conductors is their shoes. \u00c2\u00a0They often have very nice shoes. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ve always thought that was because their feet were at the eye level of the audience and in plain view of most of the string section. \u00c2\u00a0Neville Marriner is said to have the most exquisite taste in footwear in the conducting world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hopefully this guy is NOT appearing on a podium near you!
