{"id":14135,"date":"2016-06-19T09:52:43","date_gmt":"2016-06-19T16:52:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/?p=14135"},"modified":"2016-06-19T11:25:29","modified_gmt":"2016-06-19T18:25:29","slug":"its-the-people-stupid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2016\/06\/19\/its-the-people-stupid\/","title":{"rendered":"it&#8217;s the people, stupid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past week I&#8217;ve been rehearsing and performing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/portlandpiano.org\/2016-events\/\">Portland Piano International Festival<\/a> as part of the Festival String Quartet.<\/p>\n<p>The quartet is quite a collection of people to play with! Violinists Alex Kerr, concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony and professor of violin at Indiana University, Sarah Kwak, concertmaster of the Oregon Symphony, and Nancy Ives, principal cellist of the Oregon Symphony. What I love about working with people of that caliber is that they are usually always wonderful people to work with. So professional, true, but also easy going, confident, and pleasant. Both were done with the accompaniment of the Festival String Quartet and double bassist Jason Schooler (Liszt).<\/p>\n<p>The second concert, on Saturday, June 18, was a chamber music soir\u00e9e with festival artistic director and pianist Arnaldo Cohen. Each of the members of the quartet played a piece from the Golden Age of Piano\u00a0(1870-1930), which is the theme of this year&#8217;s festival. I opened the program with Liszt&#8217;s only work for viola,\u00a0<em>Romance oubli\u00e9e (Forgotten romance)<\/em>, followed by Sarah playing Sarasate&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Introduction and Tarantelle<\/em>, Nancy playing Chopin&#8217;s <em>Introduction and Polonaise Brilliante,\u00a0<\/em>and Alex with Brahm&#8217;s FAE Scherzo. With Charlie, we&#8217;ll be doing the\u00a0<em>Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise<\/em>, and with Alexander, the\u00a0<em>Piano Concerto No. 1<\/em>.
