{"id":1346,"date":"2008-10-29T19:53:49","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T02:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:08:01","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:08:01","slug":"finances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/29\/finances\/","title":{"rendered":"finances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The OSO players will be getting a briefing on the state of the orchestra&#8217;s finances tomorrow between rehearsals at the hall.\u00c2\u00a0 If I&#8217;m allowed to share some of that information, I will, but if not, I&#8217;ll give a broad-brush, impressionistic version (basically: thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or thumbs-sideways).\u00c2\u00a0 My hunch is that we&#8217;re going to be ok &#8211; the support from our donors and audiences is holding &#8211; but that some belt-tightening is going to occur.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A recent New York Times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/28\/arts\/music\/28clas.html?partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">article<\/a> has already raised the alarm about the financial crash and its supposed impact on arts organizations, but the way non-profits operate, any major shortfalls that are being reported now would have happened crash or no crash.\u00c2\u00a0 Similarly, the reports from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/28\/arts\/music\/28clas.html?partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">Oregon Shakespeare Festival<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/southern_oregons_britt_festiva.html\">Peter Britt Festival<\/a> reflect events that took place in the fiscal year ending in October.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s what gets reported in the subsequent quarters that reflects the real-world impact of the recession and stock crash.<\/p>\n<p>And above all, if people are passionate about your organization, the stock market doesn&#8217;t matter much, just look at Phil Knight&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/knights_to_give_record_100_mil.html\">huge gift<\/a> to the OHSU Cancer Institute &#8211;
