{"id":1160,"date":"2008-09-23T01:23:46","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T08:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1160"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:03:27","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:03:27","slug":"critic-stays-put","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/09\/23\/critic-stays-put\/","title":{"rendered":"critic stays put"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"David Stabler\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/olivessf.live.advance.net\/images\/special\/lostinthemusic\/david_stabler.gif?resize=100%2C118\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"118\" \/><br \/>\n<em>David Stabler<\/em><\/p>\n<p>David Stabler, the classical music critic for the Oregonian newspaper, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/the_buyout_to_stay_or_leave.html\">stated on his blog<\/a> that he&#8217;s not taking a buyout from the paper, and is staying on indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good news.\u00c2\u00a0 Full-time classical music critics are getting to be as rare as hens&#8217; teeth, and David is the only one left in the state of Oregon, so far as I can tell.<\/p>\n<p>While there are things that he writes that I might occasionally quibble with, having a critic to read on a weekly basis is becoming more of a privilege than a right these days, and David&#8217;s done a lot to promote the hard work of many, many local arts organizations, which is much appreciated here in Portland, as opposed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/courageous-critic-cut-off-at-the-knees-by-cowardly-cleveland-newspaper.html\">Cleveland, Ohio<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Coming up on Thursday: our first rehearsals for Classical 1 &#8211; the might Ninth Symphony of Beethoven.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll give my thoughts as the week progresses.\u00c2\u00a0 Meanwhile, check out David&#8217;s excellent piece on this oft-faved work (complete with some hilarious internet-sourced quotes from fans) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/beethovens_ninth_kicks.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Stabler David Stabler, the classical music critic for the Oregonian newspaper, has stated on his blog that he&#8217;s not taking a buyout from the paper, and is staying on indefinitely.
