{"id":1088,"date":"2008-08-29T12:55:01","date_gmt":"2008-08-29T19:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1088"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:01:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:01:57","slug":"speaking-in-forked-tongues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/08\/29\/speaking-in-forked-tongues\/","title":{"rendered":"speaking in forked tongues?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My OSO colleague Ron Blessinger is also the artistic director of the acclaimed new music ensemble <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/www.thirdangle.org\">Third Angle<\/a>, and this September his group and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/overview.aspx\">t:b:a festival<\/a> (Festival of Time-based Art) are presenting a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/festival_detail_new.aspx?eventid=365\">huge multimedia project<\/a> devoted to the work of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and his choreographer wife, Anna within some of his groundbreaking public spaces in downtown Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>The project has had some incredible energy and collaboration poured into it (as well as a ton of money), and looks to be the major event of the t:b:a festival this year.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the Seattle P-I&#8217;s arts critic, Regina Hackett, picked up on a press release and wrote the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/147283.asp\">following in her blog<\/a> on the P-I&#8217;s website:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the things I love about Portland, Oregon: You can be anything. If I lived there, my business card would say, &#8220;Regina Hackett. Speaker in tongues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The subject came up while reading a release from Portland&#8217;s &#8220;The City Dance of Lawrence and Anna Halprin&#8221; with &#8220;The Third Angle New Music Ensemble.&#8221; At the bottom of the list of choreographers, Randy Gragg gets a credit.<\/p>\n<p>Randy Gragg? He&#8217;s an art and urban spaces critic, formerly of The Oregonian and now editor of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandspaces.net\/\">fancy lifestyle magazine<\/a>. It&#8217;s way beneath his talents but not his pay grade. (Newspapers are floundering; lifestyle magazines are in the pink.)<\/p>\n<p>Working there makes Gragg a sell-out. The term was an insult during the heyday of the counterculture but became a compliment during the Reagan administration.
