{"id":1077,"date":"2008-08-26T17:57:26","date_gmt":"2008-08-27T00:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/?p=1077"},"modified":"2013-02-07T19:01:27","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:01:27","slug":"back-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2008\/08\/26\/back-at-work\/","title":{"rendered":"back at work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday was my first day back \u00c2\u00a0(the season began last Thursday, but I was off to wrap up the Sunriver Music Festival) at the OSO. \u00c2\u00a0My first surprise: I now have a spot in the closer parking garage! \u00c2\u00a0I guess I&#8217;m now old and decrepit enough to warrant a parking place a block from the hall (there are a limited no. of spaces, and how they&#8217;re allocated is a mystery to me &#8211; usually only those playing the large instruments such as tuba, double bass, and cello get spots in this garage, and then those musicians who have a physical challenge which requires a shorter walk to the hall). \u00c2\u00a0Since I turn 40 in just over a week, it&#8217;s a fitting honor. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re rehearsing a dog&#8217;s breakfast of pieces for the big waterfront concert at Tom McCall Waterfront Park on Thursday evening. \u00c2\u00a0Included is the ever-popular <em>1812 Overture<\/em> by Tchaikovsky, but the more interesting pieces are <em>Javelin<\/em> by Michael Torke, which was written for the Atlanta Olympic games, the White Swan pas de deux from <em>Swan Lake<\/em> with members of the Oregon Ballet Theater dancing live on a side stage to the music, and an ensemble number from Verdi&#8217;s <em>La Traviata<\/em> with members of the Portland Opera cast singing live on stage. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is good to be back, but I had such a good time in Central Oregon that I&#8217;m still a bit sad about not being there &#8211; especially as the weather is now just about perfect there (we had alternating rain and triple-digit temps during the middle of the festival).<\/p>\n<p>Last night I had the pleasure of going to dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/ten-01-portland\">Ten-01<\/a> with former OSO principal cellist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulusymphonymusicians.org\/bio-mvotapek.html\">Mark Votapek<\/a>, who was in town on a rest stop from hiking the complete <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/overview.asp\">Pacific Crest Trail<\/a>! \u00c2\u00a0He started near the California-Mexican border on May 2nd (actually he did the first 110 miles in January), and has averaged about 25 miles of hiking (with an ultra-light 20 pound pack) each and every day, with one 100 mile cycling detour around fire zones which closed the trail in Southern California. \u00c2\u00a0He&#8217;ll finish in British Columbia sometime towards the end of September. \u00c2\u00a0Amazing!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday was my first day back \u00c2\u00a0(the season began last Thursday, but I was off to wrap up the Sunriver Music Festival) at the OSO. \u00c2\u00a0My first surprise: I now have a spot in the closer parking garage! \u00c2\u00a0I guess I&#8217;m now old and decrepit enough to warrant a parking place a block from the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":303,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[115,2],"tags":[3668],"class_list":["post-1077","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-music","category-the-orchestra-world","tag-oregon-symphony"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/pa8kC-hn","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_likes_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":3014,"url":"https:\/\/www.nobleviola.com\/wordpress\/2009\/08\/25\/countdown-to-the-season\/","url_meta":{"origin":1077,"position":0},"title":"countdown to the season","author":"Charles Noble","date":"August 25, 2009","format":false,"excerpt":"Photo: vibrantjourney\/flickr.com It's hard to believe, but summer is almost over.\u00a0 No, not in terms of the 3 month-long cycle of the sun, but in terms of the Oregon Symphony's 2009-2010 season beginning a week from Wednesday.
