in memoriam

Sometimes, especially now, I find myself wondering if what we musicians do matters. Then I see something like this, and I know that what we do matters more now than ever. What a beautiful tribute to a colleague and friend lost too soon by one of the great viola sections of the world. Thank you, @METOrchestra.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him, and I’m sorry – I have certainly heard him play many times as a member of the Met viola section. I saw and heard this incredibly moving tribute to him yesterday during the gala performance, and I listened again just now. And it is so terribly sad to think how long it might be before the wonderful Met orchestra, and all orchestras everyplace, can get together again to play together.
