Leading music scholar and sometime iconoclast Richard Taruskin will speak tonight at 6:30 at the Benson Hotel.
He’s written, edited, or co-written some of the seminal books on Western music, including The Oxford History of Western Music, Music in the Western World: A History in Documents, Text and Act: Essays on Music and Performance, and Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions. The best moment of the bloated-as-usual Academy Awards ceremony had to be the second chance for Marketa Irglova to give her acceptance speech as co-winner of Best Original Song - Falling Slowly - from the movie Once. And it was a poignant and beautiful one, too: (more…)
