on auditioning

by Charles Noble on November 11, 2009 · 5 comments

Well, it’s been quiet here at the blog for some time, so I thought it might be a good thing to tell you what I’ve been up to.  I went down to Los Angeles this past Sunday to take the audition for the 3rd chair viola position (Assistant principal) of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on [...]

peter cetera rocks – oregon weather does not

by Charles Noble on September 7, 2009

We had one of our more interesting (in the Chinese curse meaning of the word) rehearsal/performance experiences Sunday afternoon and evening at the state fairgrounds in Salem.  We were the backup band for Peter Cetera, lead singer of the band Chicago.
First of all, the commute down to Salem was pretty miserable.  Pouring rain, and a [...]

on the waterfront (p.m. edition)

by Charles Noble on September 4, 2009 · 1 comment

Once again we were graced with absolutely perfect weather for our opening concert of the 2009-2010 season.  And thousands of classical music fans as well.  Not much to say about it other than it went very well, and was a lot of fun to play.  Hope you had a great time watching/listening.  Some photos from [...]

all quiet on the orchestral front

by Charles Noble on July 21, 2009

It’s the middle of the summer.  The dog days, one might say, at least here in Portland, where the mercury is expected to top 90°F again today.  There is little going on, classical musically speaking in Portland right now, except for the final concerts of Chamber Music Northwest’s summer festival this Thursday through Sunday.  The [...]

bon voyage to david stabler

by Charles Noble on July 11, 2009

Let’s all send out some serious “Allez, allez!” vibes to the Oregonian’s classical music critic David Stabler, as he rides the Seattle to Portland Classic today – and he’s doing it on a team that is doing the entire ride in one day!   That’s some serious average speed and a lot of [...]

Robert Levin, the acclaimed pianist/scholar who appeared with the Oregon Symphony a few seasons ago, gave a commencement address at the Curtis Institute of Music this year.  I found it to be a very inspirational message, one given with urgency – describing the countdown clock on classical music as being at “two minutes to midnight”.  [...]

power of community engagement

by Charles Noble on May 3, 2009

As I was saying in yesterday’s post, here’s a prime example of the power of community engagement, courtesy of Twitter:

all by myself

by Charles Noble on May 2, 2009 · 3 comments

For many of you, this past week has meant no weekend with the Oregon Symphony to look forward to – at least not in Portland.  Why?  Because the OSO is doing its Community Music Partnership trip this weekend in Tillamook, Oregon.  Yes, home of the famous cheese and accompanying cows (along with tsunami warning signs [...]

portland viola day

by Charles Noble on April 12, 2009

Yes, if you felt a disturbance in the force yesterday, it was because it was the cataclysm of Portland Viola Day, sponsored by the Oregon Viola Society.  The event was held at Lewis & Clark College, with L&C faculty member and OVS president Miriam English Ward keeping everything organized and running smoothly.
The day kicked off [...]

when time off isn’t, really

by Charles Noble on February 17, 2009

Wow, time is flying by!  I was just getting my music together for upcoming non-OSO performances, and realized that a quartet concert with the Rovetti Quartet in Astoria’s Liberty Theater is taking place very soon – March 1st.  As they say in the old country – holy crap!

It’ll be a [...]

worst day of the year…

by Charles Noble on February 15, 2009

…ride, that is!  It was the eight annual Worst Day of the Year Ride in Portland this morning, and when I woke up, it seemed like it might actually live up to its billing.  The rain was coming down, it was dark, dreary and disgusting.  But by the time I was heading out to ride [...]

the year ahead

by Charles Noble on January 2, 2009 · 3 comments

Most bloggers took a look back at 2008, but I’d like to look forward, instead.  I’ll take some chances and make a few predictions of what I think will happen in 2009, and also talk about some things that I’d like to happen in 2009 as well.
First, my predictions:
1. The Oregon Symphony will finish its [...]
