If you want to see how a $44,648* orchestra compares to a $143,260* orchestra, now’s your chance! Both the Oregon Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic have archived streaming broadcasts available online right now that both feature Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Not to take anything away from the LAPhil, but I happen to think that Oregon can stand pretty proud on its account of the Rite. Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

This is awesome — too much “Rite of Spring” is still never enough. Can’t wait to listen to the rendition by Maestro Kalmer and you & your Oregon Symphony colleagues (didn’t realize it was archived, or I would have listened to it multiple times already — my bad).
It’ll only be up for a few more days – we have a two week limit for archived broadcasts. It sucks, but that’s the way it has to be for now. We’ve got a new recording coming out at the end of October – RVW’s Fifth Symphony, Elgar’s Cockaign Overture, and Britten Four Sea Interludes. Should be pretty good!
The Stravinsky is also paired with Adams’ City Noir, too.
Why the 2 week limit when this is exactly the kind of exposure which can do the orchestra so much good, including of course making it attractive to potential sponsors and donors? Yes, I know it will boil down to money, but is it not possible for those concerned to look at the bigger picture and consider the potential benefits which – if handled well by management – would undoubtedly lead to more opportunities and in the long-term (hopefully) financial benefits to the musicians of the orchestra.

That’s good to hear, it really is great to have the chance to hear the Oregon Symphony from the other side of the Pond and I certainly agree that it punches above its weight! Can’t wait for the “This is England” CD, right from the first time I saw Carlos conduct in Germany back in 96, I always felt he’d have a special affinity for English music…
